Singapore hosts the 2008 FORMULA 1™ SingTel Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday 28 September 2008 ! It will be the first night race in Formula One history, and will be staged on public streets around the Marina Bay area, with the 5.067 km. (3.148 mile) 61-lap circuit set in an anti-clockwise direction in order to enhance safety. Live Aussie Rules action comes to Singapore, when it hosts the 9th annual 2008 Asian Championships of Australian Rules Football on Saturday 6 September 2008 at the Singapore Polo Club ! The best teams from twelve nations consist of 400 players, many former professional AFL stars and talented players from leagues all over Australia. The jam-packed day comprises the first ever Junior International Carnival, morning adult games (8:00am. start) played concurrently on both ovals, and an afternoon session concluding on the main oval with all the big games, finals (3:30pm. start), and the two best teams playing off in the grandfinal (approximately 5:00pm.). The second Aviva Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Singapore 2008 takes place on Sunday 7 September 2008. It is a world-class international triathlon competition managed by the World Triathlon Corporation and held in various locations across the world. The Singapore event will pay an incredible US$50,000 overall prize purse, equal to the world’s best and a first for an Ironman 70.3 event outside of the USA ! - the big prize money has caused major professional names to sign up, including Australian international and defending Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore Champion Belinda Granger (who this year added to her Singapore title with victory in Ironman Malaysia). The World Golfers Championship (WGC) is an international tournament designed to give amateur golfers the thrill and prestige of a global championship event by featuring qualifier players from around the world. WGC has five handicap flights of 0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25 so that individuals play against others of equal skill, and as a national team.
The World Golfers Championship Singapore 2008 is open to all male and female Singaporeans, PRs and Green Card (Employment Pass) holders aged over 18, with a recognised U.S.G.A or S.G.A. handicap. The Championship encompasses twelve Club qualifier legs between April-September 2008, with the 11th leg on Wednesday 10 September (entry closing date Friday 5 September) at the Raffles Country Club and 12th leg on Friday 26 September (entry closing date Saturday 20 September) at the Sembawang Country Club. The winner each handicap division in the Singapore Finals earns a place in the Singapore national team which will play in the WGC World Finals between Saturday 22 - Saturday 29 November 2008 at Mission Inn, Florida, USA.

The 16th Run for Hope 2008 (Cancer Research) (previously called the Terry Fox run) takes place on Sunday 5 October 2008 at the East Coast Park. The event is inspired by Canadian teenager Terry Fox, who, despite an amputated leg due to bone cancer, ran a "Marathon of Hope" across Canada in 1980 to raise funds for cancer research. The event features both a 10km. competitive race (7:45am. flag-off) and a 4 km. fun run (8:00am. flag-off). Entry fee is S$35 for adults and S$18 for full-time students, which includes a donation, official T-shirt, and one raffle ticket (adult entry). The Mr. Chai Chon Fah Veteran Volleyball Challenge Trophy 2008 takes place on Sundays 5 & 12 October 2008, 10am.- 3pm. & 10am.- 4pm. respectively, at Clementi ITE. Participation is open to all members of the public (Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and work permit holders) who are 40 years and over as at 1 January 2008 (ie. those born before or in 1968), and each team may register between a minimum of 9 players and up to a maximum of 19 players, a team manager, coach, and assistant coach. The Amore Women's Day Out, Singapore's biggest women-only aerobic-based sporting event, is back for the sixth year running over the weekend Saturday-Sunday 11-12 October 2008 at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza on Orchard Road. The New Balance REAL Run takes place on Sunday 19 October 2008 at the Changi Exhibition Centre (Aviation Park Road). The cross-terrain event has two routes - both consist of the same 4 km. trail and 0.6 km. sand sections, plus a 5.4 km. taxiway/road run for the 10 km. distance (start time 7:30am.) and a 10.4 km. taxiway/road run for the 15 km. distance (start time 7:45am.). Singapore Exchange's (SGX) iconic charity fun run, The Bull Charge™ 2008, takes place for the fifth consecutive year on Friday 24 October 2008 4:30pm. at the Padang in the Central Business District (CBD), with Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong as Guest-of-Honour. In addition to the 3.2 km. fun races, the "Big Boss" challenge, the Management Team Relay and the Doggie Road Race, last year's novelty race "Gateway Challenge", where ten teams compete in a series of challenges with an Asian twist, is back by popular demand. The Swissôtel Vertical Marathon 2008 takes place on Sunday 16 November 2008 7:30am. at Swissôtel The Stamford (2 Stamford Road, Singapore 178882.), South East Asia's tallest hotel at 226 metres. Participants face a gruelling 73-storey 1,336-step vertical climb to the hotel's rooftop helipad. The race has Men's and Women's categories of Open and ages under 20 (minimum age 12), 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, above 50, and there is also a Corporate Charity Race which will contribute to The Spastic Children's Association of Singapore. The champions in both the men's and women's Open category will fly to New York to compete in the prestigious 32nd Empire State Building (ESB) Run-Up 2009.

Fold It And Ride It ! - cyclists can carry foldable bicycles on to public transport during a a six-month (Saturday 24 May - Monday 24 November) trial scheme. Foldable cycles are allowed on MRT/LRT trains every weekday during off-peak hours and all day on weekends and public holidays, and on SBST and SMRT buses all day on weekends and public holidays. With public wellbeing a priority, public transport staff may prevent cyclists from boarding if safety guidelines are not complied with. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced (21 May 2008) the trial initiative in recognition of the increasing trend of people cycling for recreation and sport, either around the neighbourhood or to key transport nodes like MRT stations. The fourth edition of the LPGA-sanctioned Lexus Cup women's golf tournament returns (after being staged in Australia last year) to Singapore between Friday 28 - Sunday 30 November 2008. Previously hosted in 2005 and 2006 at the Tanah Merah Country Club, this year's venue is the Singapore Island Country Club, with bigger prize money of USD 1 million. The tournament, which features 12 players on each Asia-versus-the-world team, is played under foursomes, fourballs and singles format; players earn berths through rankings or the official LPGA money list, with the captains also having special picks. Team Asia and Team International will be captained respectively by Pak Se-ri and Annika Sorenstam (who will retire from competitive golf at the end of the season).
Get in training for the seventh Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2008, which takes place on Sunday 7 December 2008 ! This year the iconic Benjamin Sheares Bridge and the Singapore Flyer will be incorporated into the route for the first time. An estimated 48,000 will run in seven categories - Full Marathon (42 kms.); Half Marathon (21 kms.); 10 kms. - Men, Women, Team, Wheelchair Race; and the revamped Kids Dash (separated into four age groups - 3 years and below, 4-6 years, 7-9 years, 10-13 years). The 14th ASEAN University Games (AUG) take place between Saturday 13 - Sunday 21 December 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Undergraduate athletes are selected on merit to be part of these exciting Games. Read more details on the AUG website.
Singapore plays host for the first time as one of the stopovers in the grueling nine-month season of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008/2009 (formerly called the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race). The race starts in Alicante in Spain in October 2008 and, after ten legs covering more than 39,000 nautical miles, ends in St. Petersburg in Russia in June 2009; intermediate stops are South Africa (Cape Town), India (Kochi), Singapore, China (Qingdao), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), USA (Boston), Ireland (Galway), Sweden (Göteborg and Stockholm). The yachts depart India on Saturday 13 December and are expected to arrive at ONE Degree 15 Marina on Sentosa island in early 2009; they then depart for China on Sunday 18 January. While the main action will take place in open seas, Singapore will also hold an in-port fleet race, lasting approximately two hours and counting towards the overall Race score.

Singapore will host the inaugural Asian Youth Games during the week Thursday 2 - Thursday 9 July 2009 (news announced Monday 23 June 2008). Most of the Olympic Council of Asia's 45 member nations are expected to compete in the Games, which will feature eight sports - track and field, swimming and diving, sailing, shooting, bowling, beach volleyball, three-on-three basketball, and table tennis - and an opening ceremony to be held in conjunction with the Singapore Youth Festival. Hosting the Asian Youth Games was part of Singapore's successful bid plan submitted to the International Olympic Committee to stage the Youth Olympics in August 2010.
Singapore will host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) 2010, the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games, between Saturday 14 - Thursday 26 August 2010 (news announced on 21 February 2008 via live telecast from Lausanne, Switzerland - Singapore won with a tally of 53 IOC member votes versus 44 for Moscow (the other three November 2007 original candidate cities of Bangkok, Athens and Turin were eliminated in January 2008)). The Youth Olympic Village will be sited at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
A youth version of the Olympic Games was envisioned in 2001 by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge, and approved on 6 July 2007 by IOC members at the 119th IOC session in Guatemala City. The YOG will be an international event held every four years (in the same years as, but converse summer and winter events to, the Olympic Games), and will feature athletes aged 14-18 contesting the same 26 sports (although with a limited number of disciplines) as those scheduled for the traditional Games.
